The best Cotswolds villages for an autumn day out

The best Cotswolds villages for an autumn day out

Autumn is one of the best times to visit: quieter villages, golden stone and wooded valleys turning red and amber.

For autumn colour

  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum near Tetbury, run by Forestry England, is famous for its maples in October. Check opening times and book on the official site.
  • Batsford Arboretum near Moreton-in-Marsh. See the official site for times.

Villages that shine in autumn

  • Bibury: Arlington Row and the River Coln, much calmer than in summer.
  • Castle Combe: wooded valley setting in the southern Cotswolds.
  • Burford: a steep high street of honey-coloured stone and independent shops.
  • Painswick: known as the "Queen of the Cotswolds", with its churchyard of clipped yews.

Autumn tips

Days are shorter, so plan two or three stops and start early. Lanes can be muddy and leafy after rain, so drive slowly. Clocks go back at the end of October.
